(Erie, PA) Oklahoma! – considered the first American musical – takes center stage at the Erie Playhouse July 7-23 in a high-stepping, energetic production.

Oklahoma! is the first collaboration of famed partners Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, which was first seen in 1943. Numerous productions, revivals and a movie have captivated generations of theatre-goers hearts. From the first moment the young, handsome cowboy swaggers onstage singing “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning” audiences know this musical is going to be something special.

Oklahoma! is a simple story of a young couple who fall in love on the dusty plains in the Western Territory just after the turn of the 20th-century. Add a young lady of questionable morals, a philandering traveling salesman, a dark and dirty farmhand, the conflict between ranchers and farmers, and there is plenty to sing about.

The young lovers, Curley and Laurey, are portrayed by Anthony Ventura and Maeve Kirby respectively. Lydia Lent brings the flirtatious Ado Annie to life, with Luke Weyand as the cowboy, Will Parker, who fancies her. Will Steadman takes a comic turn as the fast-talking Ali Hakim and the dark and brooding farmhand Jud is in the capable hands of Brendan Daugherty. New to the Playhouse stage is Delthia Nolen whose Aunt Eller is sure to win many fans. Numerous Playhouse veterans and newcomers round out this bold and brilliant cast.

Of special note in this production is the “Dream Ballet,” which is being choreographed by Michael Patterson (Artistic Director, Patterson School of Ballet). Several classically trained ballet dancers have been recruited to provide a captivating interlude.

Oklahoma! is under the direction/choreography of Kate Neubert-Lechner. Additional production credits go to Andrew Rainbow for music direction, Christine Daugherty for sets and lights and Ryan Ingram for wardrobe and costume design.

Oklahoma! at the Erie Playhouse is matchless and timeless – musicals don’t come any better than this!

At the July 13 performance of Oklahoma! Linda Wingerter will be honored with the Dr. Doris Snell Award, which is presented in honor of Dr. Doris Snell, a life-long advocate for education, theatre and the arts. Doris was the first recipient of the award in 2011, followed by Judy Matthews, Bob Martin, Roberta Stoughton and Michael Malthaner. This award serves to honor individuals who dedicate themselves to the classroom and the Erie Playhouse stage.
