JURIED PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

Cummings Gallery

A Juried Photography Show showcasing some of the best photographers and serious practitioners of the medium in the Erie region continues through Friday, Dec. 15, in Cummings Gallery at Mercyhurst University. The 42 works chosen for the show by juror Fred Scruton represent a wide range of subject matter, techniques, styles and presentations. Cummings Gallery, located in the lobby of the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center, is open weekdays 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 2-5 p.m. For information, call 814-824-2092.

DANCE: ‘TIS THE SEASON

The Mercyhurst University Dance Department presents The Mercyhurst Dancers and the Liturgical Dance Ensemble in their annual holiday show ‘Tis the Season Dec. 1 and 2.  Performances at the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center are on Friday at 4:30 and 8 p.m. and on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. All tickets to this family-friendly show are $5. ‘Tis the Season, now in its sixth year, will open with the Liturgical Dance Ensemble performing five short sacred dance works to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season. MERCYHURST JAZZ ENSEMBLE CONCERT

Dr. Scott Meier directs the Mercyhurst University Wind Ensemble in concert on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 8 p.m. in Taylor Little Theatre. The Big Band Christmas performance will feature Christmas songs and arrangements by Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall, Eartha Kitt and Sammy Nestico. The Jazz Ensemble will also be joined by guest vocalists for “White Christmas,” “Santa Baby” and other numbers. NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: PETER PAN

All children, except one, grow up... A recorded performance of JM Barrie’s much-loved tale, captured live at the National Theatre, comes to the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. When Peter Pan, leader of the Lost Boys, loses his shadow, headstrong Wendy helps him to reattach it. In return, she is invited to Neverland, where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await. A riot of magic, music and make-believe ensues. DANÚ: A CHRISTMAS GATHERING

Acclaimed Irish ensemble Danú takes audiences on a trip to the Emerald Isle in this glorious celebration of the holidays, featuring virtuoso players on fiddle, flutes, button accordion and percussion; the gorgeous voice of Nell Ní Chróinín; and guest dancers Corey Purcell and Isabella DeJesus. Their Christmas concert, presented by the Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture, will take place Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. A Metropolitan Opera English-language holiday presentation, Richard Jones’s clever production of Humperdinck’s fairy-tale opera is based on the Brothers Grimm story. HOLIDAY CONCERT: ‘A MERCYHURST CHRISTMAS"

The Mercyhurst Civic Orchestra, directed by Jonathan Moser, and Mercyhurst Concert Choir, directed by Thomas Brooks, join forces for a holiday concert titled “A Mercyhurst Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 4 p.m. in the university’s Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. Soloist James Bobick joins the orchestra for Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kije Suite for Orchestra and Baritone. The program also includes Vivaldi’s Gloria in D Major RV 589 for Chorus, Soloists and Orchestra, and concludes with a Christmas carol singalong. CHRISTMAS AT MERCYHURST NORTH EAST

Enjoy talented Mercyhurst student musicians as they make the Christmas season sparkle. Christmas at Mercyhurst North East is a celebration of holiday music featuring the Mercyhurst University Choir, under the direction of Thomas Brooks, presenting music from Vivaldi’s Gloria, along with traditional Christmas choral music. The evening will also feature soloists from the D’Angelo Department of Music performing seasonal favorites. Join the choir in a carol singalong to close out the evening.
