Edinboro University designates pet-friendly campus community

Edinboro University students will have the option to bring their pets to campus this fall when the NWPA campus introduces a new pet-friendly, living-learning community for 2019-2020.

Dogs, cats and other furry friends such as rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs will be permitted to reside on campus in this new community, which will have green space dedicated for outdoor activity.

“Here at Edinboro University, one of our goals is to make this our students’ home away from home, and we have heard an increase in student interest in pet-friendly housing,” said Dr. Stacie Wolbert, associate vice president for Student Affairs at Edinboro University. “Bringing a family pet provides support for students as they transition to college life. They also provide a connection to home and a calming presence that supports students through stressful times.”

Pets that are at least six months old and have lived with the student’s family for at least three months prior to campus residency will be permitted. Reptiles and fowl, as well as animals and breeds listed in the Pet-Friendly Residence Halls policy, are not permitted.

Single-occupant rooms will be arranged in Lawrence Towers, with a pet-friendly green space at the corner of Perry Lane and Darrow Road.

Pet owners are financially responsible for the actions of the pets, including any bodily injury, housing damage or campus damage that may occur. Students must also monitor the animals’ behavior and noise levels to prevent any campus disturbances. Animals must also be up-to-date on any rabies vaccinations and have the proper licensure.

Pet-friendly residences are just one of the many Living Learning Communities that Edinboro University offers to allow students to interact outside of the classroom.

Other Living Learning Communities include First-Year Experience, Education, Pre-Law & Social Sciences, Honors, Frederick Douglass, Healthy U, Pre-Health Services, The Arts, eSports, and ROTC.
