Edinboro University's MSW Program Earns Top Rank in Pennsylvania

Edinboro University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program earned the top ranking in Pennsylvania, according to a leading online source of program analysis.

In addition to earning the No. 1 MSW rank on SocialWorkDegree.org, Edinboro also earned the No. 18 rank for Best BSW Programs in Pennsylvania

“Recognition among the top programs in the state validates our commitment to training social workers to become the best in their field,” said Dr. Erinn Lake, executive director of Edinboro’s School of Graduate Studies. “Our graduates are prepared to serve the community from the first day they step into their role as a social worker.”

SocialWorkDegree.org, an online resource focused on social work education and career advancement, released their first rankings of BSW and MSW programs across the nation this week.

The rankings were categorized by degree level – for both online and campus-based programs. The organization researched a total of 413 social work programs and ranked them based on a combination of Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation, tuition rates, and PayScale salary data.

“When we place our pre-service and active social workers, we are confident that they will directly impact individuals and families at high levels,” said Dr. Christine Rine, director of Edinboro’s MSW program. “Thanks to the hard work of not only our outstanding students but also our team of dedicated faculty who work tirelessly to prepare the next generation of advocates.”

Edinboro University was the sole higher-education institution in Northwest Pennsylvania to achieve a Top 5 ranking in the MSW list. Rounding out the Top 5 were Temple University, Marywood University, University of Pittsburgh and Widener University.

Pennsylvania’s Board of Social Work requires a minimum of a master’s degree to apply for licensure. Students pursuing a graduate-level social work degree are required to take classes focused on psychology and welfare through colleges approved by the National Association of Social Workers.

Students wishing to become a Licensed MSW are able to perform tasks such as helping patients enter rehab programs or obtain a job.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employers are expected to hire nearly 110,000 social workers through 2026, with the media pay in 2018 registering at $49,470.

Social workers are employed in settings such as mental health clinics, schools, human service agencies, and hospitals.

“We know the process of becoming a social worker includes many steps and many life-changing decisions,” said Mylinh Pham, product manager at SocialWorkDegree.org. “We want to be there to walk people through their journey, whether they are a prospective student or an experienced social worker looking to advance their career.”

SocialWorkDegree.org analysts research the lowest tuition rate available at the specified degree level. Tuition was calculated assuming full-time status. Program data including available degrees, tuition rates and details about program coursework, were collected from official school websites, reflecting data for the 2018-2019 academic year.
