Gannon University Volunteers Set to GIVE Back to Their Communities

Erie, Pa. – More than 1,000 Gannon University students, faculty, staff and alumni will work to strengthen their communities by participating in GIVE (Gannon’s Invitation to Volunteer Everywhere) Day.

For the 21st consecutive year, the Gannon University community will work alongside community partners and members in communities nationwide as volunteers will report to more than 40 service sites in Harrisburg, Buffalo, Chicago, Cleveland and throughout Erie.

In Erie, GIVE Day activities will take place at 30 locations, including the International Coastal Cleanup at Presque Isle State Park, the bluffs on the east and west bayfront, and at senior residence buildings throughout the community.

Many of these locations will be in the neighborhoods surrounding campus that are served by Our West Bayfront (OWB), a community initiative co-founded by Gannon University to enhance the quality of life in Erie’s West Bayfront by promoting civic involvement, thoughtful development, historical preservation and neighborhood pride.

“It’s not just the iconic GIVE t-shirt that marks these students, staff, and faculty members as part of the Gannon family. It’s the commitment they show in making their community a better place that really makes it clear,” said Sara Nesbitt of Gannon’s Center for Social Concerns, who is organizing the event.

GIVE Day will take place Saturday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon. Among the most notable projects are:
Strong Vincent Spruce-Up – Students will help to spruce up a room that is utilized as an incentive for appropriate behavior. Students will be painting, tidying and generally making it a great place to be.

Our West Bayfront – Our West Bayfront is partnering with Gannon students to make their shared neighborhood a place of excellence! Gannon students will be split into various groups to meet community needs, including cleaning up pocket parks, demolition and general neighborhood clean-up.
